Keeping them in small tanks is difficult. Minimum 4 to 5 fishes can be kept in a tank. Its temperature is ranging from 23 deg to 27 deg . Ph should be between 6 to 8. If the temperature and ammonia content in water is not controlled ,their is chances for discoloration of fish.

Oscar Fish Breeding

Oscar fish breeding

When planning to do oscar fish breeding it is good to take at least 1 year old fishes. So if around 10 fishes are put we can see that they will pair and move to a common area. By this we can identify the pair. After collecting fish we need to put them in another tank.

I will tell you how to identify the male and female fish. Take the fish and check the bottom of fish in which you can see 2 holes one is the waste hole and 2nd one is the reproduction hole. In case of male it is smaller than the waste hole. But in the case of female fish both the hole size will be same. In this picture you can see the difference.

We need to put a tile inside the Oscar fish breeding tank. When they are ready to lay eggs they will try to clean the tile piece. When eggs are laid. Take the tile piece and keep in a separate aquarium tank. Try to keep the tile in a 45 deg angle.

Add a sponge filter inside the egg tank. Add a little methylene blue also in to the tank. Adding methylene blue is avoid fungus attack to the eggs. The purpose of keeping the board 45 deg is that if any of the eggs are not hatched it will stick to the tile . The hatched eggs will slide out of tile.

After the eggs are hatched it will start free swimming in 5 to 7 days. During that time we can feed them with artemia. After 10 days we can start giving them other live feeds or decap artemia etc .

After the eggs are hatched try to remove the water of fries 50 % every day for atleast 10 days. Aeration for the tank should be given continously. In normal case we get around 700 to 1000 fries . After 15 day we can start giving them blood worms or frozen artemia.

When removing the eggs their is chances of fighting between the parents. An expert informed that try to reduce the water and keep around 3 inch of water and keep the parents in it along with aeration. After 1/2 hour fill the water , the fight will be stopped.

Common oscar diseases are stomach bloating, not having food properly, hole in the head etc. Stomach bloating is occuring due to the internal bacteria in the stomach . For this in 100 ltr water 1.5 gram of metro gel(Metronidazole gel) is added. We have to add at least 5 days metrogel for fish. So every day we will have to change 95 % of water and add new fresh water and put 1.5 gram of medicine. During this time do not feed the fish for two days. Hole in the head or body is occuring due to bad water. So in order to avoid this water change is a must.
