Aquarium Lighting

Hi Friends in this article we will discuss about aquarium light.

Based on lighting conditions we can differentiate plants as

  1. Easy Plants – Low lighting is required
  2. Medium Plants – Medium lighting is required
  3. Advanced plants – Bright lights are required

We can discuss in detail about these plants and their lighting requirement

Lighting is measured in lumens using an equipment called lux meter. When you are purchasing a aquarium light fitting, in the cover you will be able to see 100 lumen,200 lumen etc. This is the lumen capacity of that fitting.

For easy plants, 1 ltr water the lumens required is 10 -20 lumen.ie, if we are considering 100 ltrs of water the lumens will be 1000 – 2000 lumens.

For medium plants ,1 ltr water the lumens required is 20-40 lumen. If we are considering 100 ltrs of water the lumens will be 2000 – 4000 lumens.

For advanced plants , 1 ltr water the lumens required is above 40 lumen. If we are considering 100 ltrs of water the lumens will be 4000 and above.

So if we are planting advance plants under lumens of 10 -20 lumens the plant will grow but will get dead fastly.

You can go for flouroscent lighting ,led lighting and metal halide lighting. i would recommend to go for led lighting.

It is proved that due to the penetration capacity of led lights the plants growing faster, low cost fittings, Running cost is very low compared to other types of lighting.

Now a days water proof submersible lights are also available in market. Here i will share some of the commonly used led lights used in aquarium setting.
